The search for amissing submersiblethat was traveling to the site of theTitanicwreckage is over.
The sub started withabout 96 hours of oxygenwhen it entered the water, according to United States Coast Guard Captain Jamie Frederick, who spoke at a press conference in Boston on Tuesday. Estimates suggest that theTitanran out of breathable air on Thursday morning. However, the Coast Guard said that they didn’t hear any sounds of an implosion during their search efforts so it likely took place before the major search began near theTitanicwreckage site.

The ‘Titan’ submersible went missing on June 18 after setting out to explore the wreckage of the ‘Titanic’ on the sea floor. There were give passengers on board, including a Pakistani billionaire and his son and the OceanGate CEO and co-founder.The 21-foot sub had about 96 hours of oxygen when it entered the water. Experts guessed that the sub would run out of oxygen around 6 a.m. ET on Thursday, June 22.The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed in a press conference on Thursday that a debris field was found near the wreckage of the ‘Titanic’ and that it was consistent with a “catastrophic pressure implosion.” All five passengers would have been killed in the implosion.The Coast Guard confirmed that they did not detect sounds of an implosion during their search. This means the implosion likely happened before the search began at the site of the ‘Titanic.’ Reports of sounds detected near the wreckage would not have been the sounds of an implosion.

Per the First Coast Guard District’s official Twitter account, the crew submerged Sunday morning, June 18, and “the crew of the Polar Prince lost contact with them approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into the vessel’s dive.”The Coast Guard addedthat the submersible was lost in an area about 900 miles east of Cape Cod in the North Atlantic.
News of the missing submersible was announced on June 19 as Lt. Jordan Hart of the U.S. Coast Guard in Bostonconfirmed to CBS Newsthat personnel were “currently undergoing a search and rescue operation.” Rear Admiral John Mauger detailed more information at a news conference that Monday afternoon.
