An Oregon man faces a murder charge after allegedly walking into an FBI office and telling agents that he was the one who killed and raped a woman in Massachusetts about 44 years ago.

According to the D.A.’s office, Susan Marcia Rose, 24, was found dead in an apartment building in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood on Oct. 30, 1979.

Her cause of death was determined to be multiple blunt injuries of the head with fractures of the skull and lacerations of the brain, authorities said.

Last month, investigators said Irmer walked into the Portland FBI field office, where he allegedly told agents that he met a woman with red hair at a skating rink around Halloween in Boston in 1979, the release states.

Irmer claimed he fled to New York the next day.

Rose moved to Boston from Johnstown, Pa., and was living on Dartmouth Street at the time of her murder, authorities said.

According to the D.A.’s office, a man was tried and found not guilty of Rose’s murder in June 1981.

Investigators said they took DNA samples from Irmer following the apparent confession. That sample proved to be a match with DNA evidence taken from the murder scene more than four decades ago, authorities alleged.

It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to comment on his behalf.

“Nearly 44 years after losing her at such a young age, the family and friends of Susan Marcia Rose will finally have some answers,” District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in the release.
