Guillermo del Torohas been very carefulin selecting his follow - up to hisOscar - winning The Shape of Water , but that motion picture may now be solidified after land one of the biggest mavin in the man .
Varietyreports that del Toro is in dialogue with Leonardo DiCaprio to star in Nightmare Alley , establish on the 1946 William Lindsay Gresham novel , which was later on made into a 1947 noir of the same name . It follows the scruffy underbelly of a carnival and two dueling flimflam artist .
Del Toro has been attached to the film , which he co - wrote with Kim Morgan , since December 2017 . DiCaprio , of course , is even more selective with projects than del Toro , and has n’t seem in a film since gain his first Oscar for The Revenant back in 2015 . He ’ll next be seen in the new Quentin Tarantino moving-picture show , Once Upon a metre in Hollywood , this summer , and his interest in del Toro ’s next labor gives it a whole Modern level of excitement .

And yet , while a del Toro film noir set at a carnival vocalise dead delicious , it seems to be miss his favorite thing : supernatural beingness and creatures . That conduct us to conceive that , while Nightmare Alley may not drift “ sci - fi far ” away from its pulpy source material , the director is potential to tailor things to his liking a little moment . At least , we assume that . We know literally nothing about it outside of Variety ’s report that del Toro is hoping to sprout it in the fall . And if that happens , 2020 awards time of year could be around the recession .
Correction : This clause in the beginning posit the film was a remaking of the 1947 movie but it ’s not . It ’s another adaptation of the 1946 novel .
