“ Two Southern Classics , One Legendary Taste , ” is the marketing speech emblazoning every bottle of Cheerwine Kreme , the unholy compounding of , well , soda pop and doughnut . While Krispy Kreme has graced the tastebud of us Yankees for some sentence now , Cheerwine remains uniquely southerly . I ’m not from the South , and something tells me the marriage of two foods known for being insalubrious will end in tears .

The first matter deserving state is that I have no idea what Cheerwine tastes like in its complete United States Department of State . I ’m tell it ’s a light source , cherry - flavor sonant drink . And while my neighborhood in Brooklyn is home to two of the expert doughnut shop in this once - great nation ( Peter Pan ’s and Moe ’s Doughs , for the rum ) , I care Krispy Kreme just fine . They make wanton , oily , completely passable pastry dough that put Dunkin ’ Donuts to shame .

Even at a theoretical spirit level , doughnut soda should be yucky . It ’s not . chiefly because the “ doughnut ” component is only theorise to evoke only the taste of glaze — an ingredient which is almost entirely sugar … which is then combined with a drink that is also almost entirely wampum . There really is n’t much doughnuttyness to speak of . For a first experience with Cheerwine , it was a pleasant one , though I ’m almost certainly on the degenerate track to a taste of cavities as a result .
But what do the Cheerwine expert say ? Strangely the reaction from actual Southerners on Twitter was less than kind . Reactions ranged from letdown to feeling of genuine betrayal . One guy said it taste “ like infrangible tinker’s damn , ” which seems harsh for a product that is totally toothsome if underwhelming .

As it stands , Cheerwine Kreme is a selling gambit , and ostensibly not a very successful one at that . While a previous partnership between these venerable North Carolina marque ( a doughnut with Cheerwine - flavored creme ) was by all news report well received , the doughnut soda seems to have tap into citizenry ’ choler . The room movie reboots have a habit of “ ruining ” someone ’s puerility , messing with foods people feel regionally protective over is a certain - fire style to piss them off , even if an unlearned foreigner like me ca n’t see what all the squabble is over .
On Libra , Cheerwine Kreme is potable but too sweet , and tastes not at all like sinker , or glaze , or whatever the hell it was aiming for . And it ’s probably not uncommitted where you live . Ironically , it surely would have sell well — and been better received — outside the scoop of people who had any strong feeling about Cheerwine to begin with . Pardon me while I make an appointment with the nearest dentist .
