So you talk about being a lover of Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid and Aliens , and that was part of the appeal of doing this mash - up . Were there other films ? Is that correct ?
Well , kind of . I ’m a fan of those movies , but that did n’t make me like a shot kind - of go ‘ I require to do a film about cowboys and aliens . ’ I loved the fact that I got the script and it said Cowboys & Aliens , and I was like “ Oh okay , here we go . ” And the motion picture really took me somewhere else when I take it . And that ’s hopefully what we tried to achieve here . There ’s going to be preconceptions about the title , but in reality we ’ve done an authentic Western and tried to bring , well there ’s a dandy crowd of histrion in this movie , but some real characters together that deal with this incredible thing . When the shit hits the fan , hopefully you ’re care about them .
Your character reference has no retention at first , and he sort of evolves over the film . In working with that , he has some fixed characteristics . He ’s immediately unpitying . He ’s unforced to be , without hesitation , remorseless .
I think he ’s instinctively ruthless . And that ’s what I like . In all unspoiled Westerns , the good guy is always a piddling bit questionable , because he kind - of has to make moral judgments . There ’s an instinct within him , which is about endurance and killing , I intend , let ’s be honest . And during the movie , there ’s a sorting - of redemption about that . He waken up for the first time through this terrible experience . With Harrison ’s fictitious character as well , he ’s going through a kind - of saving process as well . That appeal to me , it give it a few more level and I kind of like bad guy , ripe guy . They ’re kind - of the more interesting people .
On that same storey , I do it you ’ve done it more immediately with James Bond , but this type of character , Jake is , is kind - of a trope unto itself for the Western : the silent , strong type . What the challenge was in sample to take a very conversant character that ’s been played by many character over the twelvemonth and give it your own flavor to it ?
I just wanted to represent a cowpuncher for a long time . I do n’t be intimate really . I give it everything I could in the sense that I watched as many horse opera as I could . They can movie quick , Christ almighty . Yes in a way , but no in another way . Because ultimately , you ’re plug to utilize your resourcefulness as an actor and that ’s part of the job , and we laughed about it . You kind of have to see the ridiculousness of it , but you ’re give your faith over to some really technically brainy people in Industrial Light and Magic , and having total faith that they are going to be able to make it real and you ’ve get to give them the reactions . If you do n’t give it to them , they ’ve get nothing to put to work off . In spite of the fact we were giggling about it , we had to commit to it as well .
And when Jon was playing an foreigner ?
Oh , did he act an alien ? … He might well have done . He ’s in the movie in little chip . I think he ’s on a wanted bill sticker in the jail .
As a fan of western film , was there a particular staple that you really could n’t wait to shoot or was really important for you to be in the moving picture ?
Galloping across a prairie . I did n’t think Harrison Ford was going to be doing it next to me , but that ’s one of the biggest thrills .
Could you boom a fiddling fleck on that , and work with Harrison Ford ?
I ’m a lover , and have been , as a mass of people are . But he ’s an actor and I ’ve been favourable enough to find with working with great actors is that they ’re first and foremost all they require to do is get it correct . He came powering in with lots of estimation , but also with humor and gracility and all those thing you ’d hope in somebody , but you ca n’t anticipate . He want to take part in the movie . I ’m like “ fuck it ” have as much as you want . But across the board , I could lecture about Harrison until the moo-cow number home . I noticed that your character keeps his lid with him throughout the whole celluloid .
Ca n’t suffer your hat . All the wranglers on the bent , I lost my hat a couple of times , I had to buy a crateful of beer everytime I lost my hat . So I paste that shit to my head [ Laughs ] .
Jon told me last night that there was a fit that you hombre were operate to do where both your chapeau fell off , and you were conk out to go for the unseasonable one and then Harrison goes : “ No , that ’s my hat . ”
We nearly did it . It ’s too on - the - olfactory organ .
Olivia said she rally her whole life , had you ? Or was this new ?
Oh no . I had been involved with movies before that had no money to bear for horses or only on the day , so I kind - of ended up variety - of doing picture where I ’d sort - of , as you need every actor can they ride , they always say yes and I always say yeah , kinda . And they ’d stay you on a sawhorse , and you ’d sort - of make-believe and go for you do n’t fall off , but I get the chance to ride a fate . I ca n’t talk how fantastic that was . It was just great to ascertain and realize in reality I get it on nothing . Every day is , kind of , a bit of a learnedness process . Harrison bought two horses , both my horse and his sawbuck . As far as having that other - worldly , art object of technology on your hand and talking about keeping it real . How do you as an player check what a real reaction to that would be ? Like how do you take someone from the nineteenth century and assay to put your drumhead in that space ?
You make shit up … . I mean , you do n’t . You talk about it . That ’s what you do .
But it does seem very naturalistic , I mean it does seem the way anyone would answer to it .
We practise for a duet weeks , at least a couple workweek . I was working with Russell for about four weeks all - in - all . And then when we were filming it , it was constantly a question we were always asking ourselves : how do we keep it authentic ? How do we keep it authentic ? And that was just the aim . It ’s just the way we sort - of make the movie . But joke apart , you make shit up .

This one ’s called Cowboys & Aliens [ Laughs ] . Joking aside . We ’re trying to get this to as wide an audience as possible , this is not the movie to discuss or develop those ideas . But it ’s interesting , “ why aliens ? ” After the state of war and during the atomic old age there ’s was a flock about aliens assail , because it was this constant menace . There ’s whole thesis to write on this , and I ’m trusted you will . masses have PhDs on this matter and address why we apply science fabrication to civilisation , because there are other fears in our aliveness . But it ’s much easier and much more virtuously proper to pillory unknown than to blast each other .
