Last Nox , Chuck was wrasslin ’ with Rassilon ! Timothy Dalton ’s superb client - starring turn managed to elevate an otherwise “ meh ” episode , at least until it took a startling turn in its concluding moments . plunderer in advance !
It ’s no secret that this time of year of Chuck has felt a bit more blah than former years — and I do n’t really think it ’s because Chuck and Sarah became a pair at last . They were a couple in the derriere closing of season three , and those were some great episode . It ’s more that the constant pauperism to show us the growing pains of Chuck and Sarah ’s family relationship does n’t make for engrossing television — last night ’s instalment wanted us to believe that this was their first bighearted competitiveness as a twosome , but it felt like their hundredth fight to me , honestly .
The other big problem with the season , thus far , has been the staring lack of narrative zing in the “ search for Chuck ’s mom ” plot line — couple with the deficiency of a warm antagonist like The Ring and/or Shaw .

So it ’s especially welcome that Timothy Dalton was there to liven up up last Nox ’s episode . Honestly , he ’s never been so much fun to take in as he was as Tuttle , an MI6 factor and Chuck ’s mom ’s handler . With the formative fork attack and the bollocks envy of field agents like Chuck and the obsessive quoting of manuals on how to be torment and the Alias fan - boying , he was one of the most adorable guest stars the show has featured in yonks … and then , of course , the whole thing move around out to be a false persona , and Tuttle is actually the secret enemy , Volkoff , who seems to have a matter conk on with Chuck ’s mom . gold rush — the show all of a sudden has a lot more oomph .
That does n’t even include the fact that Chuck ’s mom apparently found the equipment that neutralise his Intersect programming — although I ’m sure there ’s more to it than adjoin the eye — and now Chuck is totally useless as a spy . And ( hopefully at least ) the whole “ is Chuck ’s mom a regretful guy ” question has been laid to rest forever . Although , of course , Mary Bartowski does at least save her Logos ’s life one more time . Here ’s a clip the electronic internet released :
The other affair that elevated this installment above being yet another “ Chuck and Sarah are having a kinship effect that perfectly everybody has to blab out about ” episode , besides Dalton ’s great invitee spot , was the whole sequence where Mary Bartowski at long last reunite with her girl , Ellie . Is this the first time Chuck has ever pass theBechdel Test ? Possibly not — Sarah has in all probability talk to General Beckman or Ellie about non - Chuck - interrelate material before . But this felt like a rarefied , welcome bit of two peripheral characters actually feel like real hoi polloi , whose lives do n’t only revolve around Chuck , and Linda Hamilton seemed to be doing some act , for the first metre on this show . You could really believe these mass were female parent and girl , and they have a literal , if damaged , human relationship . ( I also like Chuck ’s mom recognizing Morgan and him reminiscing about her Rice Krispies squares . )

So let ’s go for that the heavy cliffhanger at the death of this episode really leave to some more interesting stories — like , maybe Chuck wo n’t get back the Intersect 2.0 , but instead he has to activate some other version . ( perchance having to do with the glowy light in the old 1968 Mustang that Ellie and Awesome establish ? ) And countenance ’s go for that Timothy Dalton continues to invigorate up this old show with his twinkly - eyed menace . Most of all , let ’s hope that the evacuant scene where Sarah and Chuck beat up bad guys while working out their “ first fight ” actually does lead to a pause in their endless human relationship proceeds . We can always trust , anyway .
