While sift through image taken by the Rosetta spacecraft of Comet 67P , an unpaid British astronomer has uncovered a previously unknown vertical drop that looks like something right out of Mordor .
Theoriginal image was captured by Rosetta ’s NavCamat a distance of 20.1 km from the centre of the comet on December 10 .
But it was Stuart Atkinson who noticed the one kilometer ( 0.62 mile ) drop-off . As he writes on hisblog :

[ As ] soon as I insure that image I could see one area was just cry out to be pasture and turned into one of my landscape painting views – there was our best view yet of the towering cliff face on the inside of the small lobe … Looking at that part of the image I could see that with a little workplace ( which turn out to be a LOT of work , but never mind ! ) those drop could be isolated and their straight magnificence convey out . So , that ’s what I started to do , and some time later this is what I do up with …
Looking at the foot of the drop , you could see some relatively smooth terrain dotted by boulders , some of them as tumid as 20 meters ( 65 foundation ) across .
It may look daunting , but owing to the extreme low gravity on the comet , a human being could in reality hold out the leap .

Atkinson ’s process imageearned him NASA ’s Astronomy Picture of the Dayyesterday . In reception , he read it would n’t have been potential if the ESA did n’t make its photos available to the world . Ina follow - up blog posthe writes :
I am so , so happy about that , severely . Not just because personally it is squeamish to have an persona which took a long sentence to make being seen and shared so widely now , but in the main because it designate why the ESA decision to on a regular basis release navcam images from the ROSETTA mission was the correct one to take – it has allow masses like me to use ROSETTA figure of speech for Outreach , and to promote the mission to the medium and the populace . Every reTweet and every FB share and comment leaven how much interestingness in the military mission there is out here . multitude are blown away by that image and the view of the cliffs it shows , so give thanks you AGAIN to ESA for letting us see the navcam images and permit us to use and play with them !
